The idea of beginning a Clothes Bank initiative came to our minds after we observed a conversation between a cancer patient, who had entered the hospital's OPD section wearing tattered clothes, and their doctor who was explaining to them the importance of maintaining lasting personal hygiene. As the conversation went about, it came to our attention that a number of cancer patients from underprivileged backgrounds barely have the resources to provide for their own food and medicines, thus reducing their chances of having access to clean, tidy clothing.
With treatment going on for durations exceeding months of time, the importance of comfortable and practical clothing achieves greater significance in the lives of cancer patients. With this information in mind, our Clothes Bank reached out to people through various channels of social media to request for donations to help the patients in need. As the message spread far and wide, a large number of people started coming forward by donating their pre-loved, gently-worn clothes and soon enough, our first Clothes bank was inaugurated at Dr. Bhubaneswar Borooah Cancer Institute (BBCI) in Guwahati, on November 23, 2018.
